Macron to Meet Lebanon PM Nawaf Salam in Paris for Ceasefire Talks

Paris: France's President Emmanuel Macron is due to meet Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam in Paris on Friday, the Elysee Palace has said. The talks will focus on the ceasefire agreement with Israel and Lebanon's plan to ensure all weapons are held exclusively by the state.

According to Qatar News Agency, Macron is expected to stress the need for full compliance with the ceasefire by all sides and to urge Lebanese authorities to move ahead with the second phase of extending state control and sovereignty across the country. The French president will also reaffirm France's full support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, describing them as a cornerstone of national sovereignty and stability, ahead of an international conference on Lebanese sovereignty to be held in Paris on March 5.

Economic and financial reforms needed to restore Lebanon's recovery and strengthen its sovereignty will also be discussed. A ceasefire was agreed in November 2025, although Israeli forces have remained on five strategic hills in southern Lebanon. The upcoming conference aims to raise funds for the Lebanese army amid the country's severe economic crisis, which began in 2019.
