Doha: Qatari and Qatar-based filmmakers, whose films are featured in the 'Made in Qatar' programme at the 2024 Ajyal Film Festival, have emphasized the significant impact of the Doha Film Institute's (DFI) continuous support in nurturing their cinematic ambitions. The programme showcases a diverse array of films that reflect the unique stories and perspectives of the filmmakers. According to Qatar News Agency, Ali Al Hajri, a Qatari director, expressed gratitude for DFI's comprehensive support, which includes workshops, courses, and mentoring sessions. His film, "I Lay for You to Sleep," is described as a contemplative experimental narrative inspired by the death of his father when he was eight years old. Al Hajri aims to convey a message that challenges conventional perceptions of death, portraying it as a spiritual blessing rather than a dark end. Obada Jarbi, a Palestinian/Jordanian filmmaker residing in Qatar, directed "Breshna," a film that tells the story of a woman's journey towards peace and resilie nce after experiencing a violent attack in Kabul. Jarbi highlighted the harsh realities faced by the Arab and Islamic world, emphasizing the importance of hope for the future and the desire for a normal life. Karim Emara, the director of "Cochlea," produced with the support of Qatar's Ministry of Public Health, explores themes of gentleness and grace through the reunion of a divorced mother and her son. Emara shared insights into the filmmaking process, noting the importance of improvisation and embracing the organic nature of cinema. Paul Abraham, director of "Alkaline," also supported by the Ministry of Public Health, reflected on the use of cinema as a tool for communication and self-discovery. His film explores his relationship with his health-conscious father, and the support from DFI in Doha greatly facilitated the filming and post-production process. Abraham expressed gratitude for the opportunity to deepen his understanding of his father through this cinematic journey.
