Doha: Major share indexes slipped in Asia on Monday, affected by the decline in US stocks. Australia's S and P/ASX 200 index fell 1.5% to 8166.40 points, while South Korea's Kospi declined 1.2% to 2486.14 points. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index declined 1.3% to 18820.46 points, while mainland China's CSI 300 weakened 0.5% to 3154.37 points. Japanese markets were closed on Monday.
According to Qatar News Agency, US stock futures fell, while oil prices surged more than $1 a barrel after President Joe Biden's administration expanded sanctions against Russia's critically important energy sector over its war in Ukraine. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 696.75 points, or 1.6%, to close at 41,938.45. The S and P 500 dropped 1.5% to 5,827.04. The NASDAQ Composite Index of technology stocks also lost 317.25 points, or 1.6%, to 19,161.63.
