Doha:Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art has announced a new initiative called Qom’a, inviting 20,000 people from across Qatar to contribute to a large-scale, bio-based paper mache sculpture. This project aims to achieve a Guinness World Records title for the most people making paper mache simultaneously.
According to Qatar News Agency, the initiative is supported by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the Ministry of Municipality. Participants will engage in hands-on workshops to prepare and shape a papier-mâché mixture made from reclaimed palm material and pages from Mathaf’s past exhibition catalogues.
The name Qom’a is derived from the Arabic term for the small cap that joins a date to its stalk, reflecting a familiar element of Qatar’s cultural landscape. The sculpture concept, developed by school students through workshops, is inspired by the museum’s history, architecture, and collection. These workshops were mentored by Mathaf’s Learning and Outreach Department.
Zeina Arida, Director of Mathaf, emphasized the project’s aim to foster connection and shared experiences through art. She stated, “With Qom’a, we are inviting communities to become part of the artwork itself, while exploring how materials rooted in our environment and local memory can be transformed into something new that carries a collective story.”
Registration for Qom’a is now open, welcoming individuals and families of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. The initiative offers an opportunity to contribute to a collective artwork that celebrates community, creativity, and sustainability. Participation in the project will continue until November 19, 2026, at Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art.
