MECC Issues Guide on Radiation Practice Standards in Nuclear Medicine

Doha: HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, has issued Decision No. 30 of 2025 approving the "Guide to Radiation Practice Standards in Nuclear Medicine." The move is part of national efforts to strengthen the radiation safety framework and apply the highest quality and safety standards in the country's medical sector.

According to Qatar News Agency, the guide aims to regulate radiation practices in nuclear medicine and ensure the safe use of devices and radioactive materials, thereby protecting patients, workers, and the environment. The guide was developed following a comprehensive review of national laws and international standards, drawing on best global practices and experiences, as well as lessons learned from radiation incidents documented by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

It serves as a national reference for health facilities and radiation professionals, specifying the types of devices and materials used in nuclear medicine departments, along with protocols for their use in line with internationally approved radiation protection standards, including recommendations from the IAEA and the World Health Organization.

The decision forms part of a series of regulatory legislation issued by the ministry in recent years, including Decision No. 11 of 2025 on instructions for the safe transport of radioactive materials by vehicles. Work is underway on additional decisions to support the state's radiation protection system.

Through this step, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) seeks to bolster its oversight framework in keeping with scientific and technological advancements, contributing to the protection of the environment and public health while providing the highest levels of safety in the peaceful uses of radiation in Qatar.
