Doha: Meta, the parent company of Instagram, announced Tuesday its intention to implement stricter content restrictions for users under the age of 18.

According to Qatar News Agency, the company stated that the new system will limit exposure to posts containing profanity, risky behavior, references to drugs, or other content deemed inappropriate for younger audiences. These restrictions will also apply to Meta's generative AI tools.

Meta clarified that the update will automatically place young users' accounts under a content classification system designed for ages 13 and above. This system enables parents to adjust settings for increased supervision and set usage limits through the Limited Content Settings. Additionally, young users will be prevented from interacting with accounts that share content unsuitable for their age group.

In August, Meta introduced protective measures across its AI-powered products to shield minors from conversations involving self-harm or suicide. These steps followed a comprehensive overhaul last year aimed at strengthening privacy and parental controls for Instagram accounts belonging to users under 18.
