Doha: The seminars accompanying the 15th edition of Milipol Qatar covered many topics related to safety and rescue on the Civil Defense Technical Requirements Guide, guidelines for good practices and safe storage, handling hazardous chemicals, and other topics. According to Qatar News Agency, Lieutenant Eng. Hessa Ahmed Al Jassim from the General Directorate of Civil Defense at the Ministry of Interior presented a working paper on the second edition of the civil defense technical requirements guide. She provided a comprehensive explanation of the importance of the guide for preventing fires and protecting lives and property, reviewing the efforts made to prepare the guide in a manner that suits the Qatari environment and highlighting the most prominent points included in the guide in its first and second editions. For his part, Captain Eng. Mohammed Talal Al Marri from the General Directorate of Civil Defense presented a paper on the guidelines for good practices, safe storage, and handling of hazardous ch emicals. He emphasized that the industrial boom witnessed by the State of Qatar necessitated a guideline related to the type of construction, method of handling, manufacturing, and operation. The guideline for the safe storage of hazardous materials was prepared based on a set of international standards, in addition to the results of an assessment of current risks. He reviewed the most prominent articles of the guideline. The third paper, presented by Major Eng. Khaled Mohammed Al Obaidli from the General Directorate of Civil Defense, focused on the requirements for existing buildings and facilities. It dealt with the definition of existing buildings and facilities and architectural requirements, highlighting the most important safety requirements, including those for fire extinguishing, alarm, ventilation systems, and necessary signage at the main entrance, along with other requirements specified by the law. The last paper, presented by Sawsan Daham, Founder and CEO of Siena specialized engineering consult ing, reviewed a case study of the Qatari civil defense in the GCC Countries through fire infrastructure planning. She emphasized that the GCC countries have distinctive and unique systems in security and safety, noting that the lessons learned from the study of civil defense in the GCC countries confirm that procedures, regulations, and laws keep pace with the latest international standards.
