MOPH Organizes Workshop to Empower Medical Directors for Safe Leadership in Healthcare

Doha: The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) recently organised a workshop entitled "Empowerment Towards Safe Leadership in Professional Practice" for medical directors. Assistant Undersecretary for Healthcare Regulatory Affairs at MOPH, Dr Ghanim Ali Al Mannai, emphasized the Ministry's commitment to enhancing medical directors' capabilities as a critical step in improving healthcare quality, ensuring patient safety, and fostering a culture of safe leadership. He highlighted the pivotal role of medical directors in building an integrated health system by supervising clinical performance, ensuring adherence to approved procedures, and promoting clinical governance.

According to Qatar News Agency, Dr Al Mannai underscored the necessity of empowering medical directors, which requires high competence and effectiveness. The role extends to enhancing performance and participating in continuing medical education and accreditation programs to ensure the adoption of best professional and ethical practices. He reinforced the Ministry's dedication to developing the leadership capacities of medical directors, viewing enlightened and responsible health leadership as fundamental to ensuring a safe and effective healthcare environment.

Assistant Director of the Health Professions Department at MOPH, Masouma Fadel Sada, stated in her opening remarks that the Ministry's efforts contribute to embedding safe leadership concepts within healthcare institutions. This initiative is part of a broader effort to empower medical and administrative staff to ensure service quality and patient safety. She confirmed that the medical director plays a crucial role in ensuring safe medical practice and implementing approved policies and procedures.

Sada highlighted the medical director's role as a key partner in ensuring sound medical documentation and managing complaints and health disputes within the facility. Strengthening the role of the medical director is seen as essential for improving patient outcomes, boosting preventative measures, and optimizing the use of available health resources. She emphasized the value of exchanging experiences and discussing challenges during the workshop to enhance performance and entrench a patient safety culture.

The workshop reviewed the responsibilities of medical directors within health facilities, the implementation of national legislation regulating health professions, and the evolution of Qatar's health sector in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Health Strategy (2024-2030). Topics also included the legal and regulatory framework for practicing health professions, policies for assessing practitioners' fitness as they age, and mechanisms for handling complaints and health disputes.

A panel discussion allowed attendees to share experiences and highlight successful examples of effective medical administration. This contributed to developing the healthcare working environment, promoting patient safety, and improving service quality. The workshop concluded with a Q and A session to clarify strategic approaches and enhance interaction concerning safe leadership in professional practice.
