Multiple Casualties in Russian, Ukrainian Exchange of Drone Attacks

Moscow: Three individuals were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on Russia overnight, while 15 others were injured in Russian shelling of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that one civilian was killed in the Lipetsk region in western Russia, and another in the Tula region near Moscow, as a result of Ukrainian drone strikes. A third fatality was reported in the Belgorod border region due to artillery shelling. The ministry added that Russian air defenses intercepted 155 Ukrainian drones during the attack.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military announced that the drone strikes targeted an aircraft factory near Moscow and a missile manufacturing facility. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russian shelling struck Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city located in the northeast, injuring nine people. An additional eight individuals were injured in separate shelling that targeted the coastal city of Odessa.

The exchange of drone and artillery attacks between the two countries follows the renewed expression of support for Ukraine by the United States. President Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he had received "concrete dates" from US President Donald Trump regarding the delivery of new weapons.

In a related development, European Union foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas, speaking from Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) forum, condemned the recent Russian strikes on Ukraine, describing them as "unacceptable" and warning of potential new European sanctions against Moscow.

Amid the ongoing escalation and diplomatic deadlock, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Kuala Lumpur on the margins of the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting. Secretary Rubio presented what he described as "a new idea or concept" concerning the situation in Ukraine, which he plans to discuss further with President Trump. Rubio also conveyed President Trump's "dismay" and "disappointment" to Minister Lavrov regarding the lack of progress in resolving the conflict.

Ukrainian officials and members of the US political establishment continue to urge the Trump administration to impose additional sanctions on Russia, particularly in light of the stalled diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
