N. Korea Tests Large-Caliber Multiple Rocket Launcher

Doha: North Korea has test-fired an upgraded large-caliber multiple rocket launcher system (MRLS) to assess its effectiveness, according to North Korean state media. This development was reported on Wednesday, following the test that took place on Tuesday.

According to Qatar News Agency, the test involved four MRLS rockets using new technology, successfully hitting a target in waters 358.5 kilometers away from the launch point. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Jong-un emphasized the test's importance in enhancing the strategic deterrent's effectiveness. He noted that improvements had been made to maximize the launcher's strike capability, mobility, intelligence, and accuracy.

Kim Jong-un also disclosed to KCNA that the upcoming ninth congress would outline future plans to strengthen the country's nuclear deterrent. He stated that building the most reliable offensive capability and enforcing a deterrence strategy is a consistent aspect of the party's national defense policy.

The weapons test coincides with expectations that North Korea will hold its first ruling party congress in five years early next month. The day before the test, South Korea's military reported detecting multiple short-range ballistic missiles launched from north of Pyongyang toward the East Sea, traveling approximately 350 kilometers.
