National Archives of Qatar Engages in Global Dialogue on Preserving National Memory

Amman: The National Archives of Qatar participated in the first international conference on the role of national libraries and archives in preserving national memory amidst a changing digital landscape. The event was organized by Jordan's National Library to commemorate its 50th anniversary. According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Al Buainain, Secretary-General of the National Archives of Qatar and Chairman of the Memory of the World Committee for the Arab Region, delivered a keynote address at the conference. He extended his congratulations to the Jordanian National Library, recognizing its 50-year journey as an enduring symbol of knowledge, science, and Arab cultural identity. Dr. Al Buainain highlighted the conference's theme as aligning with the shared mission of preserving the collective memory of nations, fostering creativity, safeguarding language, and adapting to digital advancements. He noted that the convening of this conference signifies not only a reflection on past achievements but a lso a commitment to future endeavors. He further emphasized the ongoing efforts of the National Archives of Qatar in fulfilling its mission to preserve and document Qatari heritage through a comprehensive series of initiatives. The newly launched national strategy aims to establish a modern archival system emphasizing digital transformation, improving accessibility to documents, and promoting the ethos of documentation within society. Dr. Al Buainain also underscored the National Archives of Qatar's recognition of the challenges in safeguarding Arab documentary heritage, which led to hosting the "Memory in Heritage" conference in collaboration with UNESCO. This initiative resulted in the establishment of the "Memory of the World" Committee for the Arab region. The three-day conference, chaired by Professor Dr. Nidal Al-Ayasrah, Director-General of the National Library, saw participation from 18 countries, fostering a collaborative platform for discussing the future of national libraries and archives.
