Nine people were killed due to heavy rains that fell in the city of Abu Hamad, Nile State, northeastern Sudan. Local medical sources said that the heavy rains caused a number of houses to collapse on their residents, resulting in the death of nine people and the injury of others. The sources added that "many of the injured were still arriving at the hospital," while residents confirmed that the heavy rains caused the collapse of most of the houses and all the shops in the market. In a related context, the Federal Emergency Operations Center in Sudan said in a statement that the heavy rains and floods have claimed lives of 32 people since July 7 in seven of the country's 18 states, confirming that dozens of people were injured and more than five thousand homes were damaged. Heavy rains usually fall in Sudan between May and October, a period during which the country witnesses dangerous floods that damage homes, infrastructure and crops. Last week, five people were killed in Port Sudan on the east coast due to floods. The United Nations (UN) confirms in its report that these climatic phenomena have displaced more than 21,000 people since last June, most of them in areas witnessing fierce fighting, warning that with the approach of the rainy season, entire areas could be isolated due to heavy rains and seasonal floods.
