OIC Announces Resumption of Syria’s Membership, Endorses Arab Plan for Gaza Reconstruction

Jeddah: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Saturday announced the resumption of Syria's membership and the adoption of the Arab plan presented by Egypt, in full coordination with Palestine and Arab countries, aimed at early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza. The plan was approved during the recent extraordinary Arab summit held in Cairo.

According to Qatar News Agency, the decision was adopted by the OIC's Council of Foreign Ministers following an extraordinary ministerial meeting held at the OIC headquarters in Jeddah.

The decision welcomed the convening of an international conference in Cairo at the earliest opportunity for Gaza's recovery and reconstruction, in cooperation with Palestine and the United Nations. It urged the international community to participate in the conference to expedite the rehabilitation of Gaza and called for the establishment of an international fund to care for Gaza's orphans in collaboration with the United Nations.

The OIC reaffirmed its commitment to a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in the Middle East as a strategic option, based on the full withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from all Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

The decision emphasized the need to obligate Israeli occupation forces to implement the permanent and sustainable ceasefire agreement in Gaza, announced on January 15 with joint mediation from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, aiming for a comprehensive and permanent end to Israeli aggression. It also called for facilitating the return of displaced persons to their homes, the withdrawal of occupation forces, the opening of all crossings, and ensuring sufficient humanitarian aid reaches all parts of Gaza.

The OIC firmly rejected and condemned plans aimed at the displacement of the Palestinian people, whether individually or collectively, within their land or outside, or any form of forced displacement, exile, or deportation under any circumstances or pretext.

The decision demanded a halt to all illegal annexation and settlement policies, house demolitions, land confiscations, infrastructure destruction, and Israeli military incursions into Palestinian camps and cities.

It called for support for Palestine's right to full membership in the United Nations and its bodies, appreciating the positions of countries that have recognized the State of Palestine.

The OIC affirmed support for international coalition efforts to implement the two-state solution, led by Saudi Arabia as the head of the joint Arab-Islamic committee on Gaza, alongside the European Union and Norway, and active participation in the international conference on resolving the Palestinian issue and implementing the two-state solution, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, scheduled to be held at the United Nations headquarters in New York in June.

The decision praised the work of the joint Arab-Islamic ministerial committee, chaired by Saudi Arabia, and called for continued efforts to communicate Islamic and Arab positions to all countries and international organizations, explaining the Arab plan for Gaza reconstruction while upholding the Palestinian people's right to remain on their land and their right to self-determination.

The OIC emphasized the necessity of implementing the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon in all its provisions and adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 without any partiality, condemning Israeli violations of both.

The decision also condemned Israeli aggression against Syria and incursions into its territory, which constitute a blatant violation of international law and an assault on Syrian sovereignty, escalating tensions and conflict. It called on the international community and the UN Security Council to take immediate action to enforce international law on Israeli occupation, halt its aggression, and withdraw from the Syrian territories it has occupied.
