Bangkok: Airports of Thailand (AOT) announced on Saturday that operations at six major airports, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, Chiang Rai, and Phuket, resumed normal operations after undergoing safety inspections following Friday's earthquake in the Thai capital.
According to Qatar News Agency, in a statement, the company confirmed that all airport buildings were structurally sound and that aviation infrastructure met safety standards. Most of Bangkok's metro and light rail services also resumed normal operations, according to operators. However, two light rail lines remain suspended pending further safety inspections.
On Friday, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared a state of emergency in Bangkok after a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck the city. The quake's epicenter was in Myanmar, which also experienced a 7.7-magnitude tremor that left 1,002 people dead, 2,376 injured, and 30 missing.
In Thailand, the earthquake so far resulted in six fatalities, 22 injuries, and 101 missing persons, while causing significant infrastructure damage, according to local authorities.
