Colombo: The death toll from the floods that struck Sri Lanka and Thailand has risen to more than 370, while hundreds are still missing. In a statement on Sunday, Sri Lanka Disaster Management Centre said that at least 212 people have died after a week of heavy rains caused by Cyclone Detwah, while 218 people are still missing.
According to Qatar News Agency, the statement indicated that the northern parts of Colombo experienced flooding as the water level of the Kelani River rose rapidly, confirming that although the cyclone had ended, heavy rains upstream were now flooding low-lying areas along the riverbanks. Entire areas of Colombo were flooded as the cyclone weakened and headed toward India.
In Thailand, 162 people have died in the worst floods in a decade, and authorities continue to distribute aid to tens of thousands who have been evacuated from their homes. Authorities continue to search for the missing, and the government has taken measures to help those affected.
Authorities in countries in South and Southeast Asia are working to clear roads and remove debris to find the missing, following the natural disaster of heavy rains, floods, and landslides.
