Peruvian President Calls for General Elections in April 2026

Lima: Peruvian President Dina Boluarte announced that general elections will be held in April 2026, a move aimed at ending years of political instability in the country.

According to Qatar News Agency, in a televised speech, Boluarte said that the upcoming elections will include the selection of a new president, along with 130 members of the Chamber of Deputies and 60 members of the Senate, noting that this is the first time the bicameral system has been adopted since the early 1990s.

President Boluarte emphasized that the elections will be democratic, fair, and transparent, but did not reveal whether she intends to run in the upcoming presidential elections.

Boluarte assumed power in 2022, following the ouster of former President Pedro Castillo, who was removed from office after attempting to dissolve Parliament to avoid a vote to impeach him, just two years into his five-year term.
