Doha:Qatar Airways Group has entered the Japanese aircraft financing market by signing its first Japanese Operating Lease with Call Option (JOLCO) transaction. This agreement covers three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, with HSBC and JP Lease Products and Services Co., Ltd. (JLPS) playing key roles. HSBC acted as the debt arranger and sole lender, while JLPS handled the underwriting and arrangement of the JOLCO equity.
According to Qatar News Agency, this deal is the first of three planned under Qatar Airways Group’s inaugural JOLCO program in Japan, which will support a total of seven aircraft. JLPS is responsible for arranging equity across the program, establishing the airline’s presence in the Japanese financing market and strengthening its financial partnerships in Asia.
Qatar Airways Group views the JOLCO market as a strategic source of long-term funding. The transaction not only marks a financing milestone but also demonstrates the airline’s financial strength and ability to attract international capital. This entry into the Japanese market reflects confidence from Japanese investors, known for their selectivity in supporting top-tier airline credits.
Hamad Ali Al Khater, Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways Group, emphasized the strategic importance of this financing source for future fleet investments and growth opportunities. Teiji Ishikawa, President and CEO of JP Lease Products and Services, expressed satisfaction with the transaction and highlighted its significance as the beginning of a long-term program with Qatar Airways.
Abdul Hakeem Mostafawi, CEO of HSBC Qatar, noted the bank’s role in supporting Qatar Airways’ fleet expansion and diversification of funding sources through this transaction. The partnership aims to connect leading airlines with global capital, reinforcing Qatar Airways’ commitment to building long-term relationships with financial institutions and investors worldwide.
