Qatar and US Urge EU to Reconsider Corporate Sustainability Directive

Brussels: The State of Qatar and the United States of America have jointly issued an open letter to the Heads of State of European Union (EU) Member States, raising concerns about the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and its potential impact on LNG export competitiveness, as well as the availability of reliable and affordable energy for EU consumers.

According to Qatar News Agency, the letter was signed by Qatar's Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, and the US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright. It highlighted that the current wording of the CSDDD "poses a significant risk to the affordability and reliability of critical energy supplies for households and businesses across Europe and an existential threat to the future growth, competitiveness, and resilience of the EU's industrial economy."

The letter further expressed that the provisions within the CSDDD "pose significant challenges and seriously undermine the ability of the American, Qatari, and broader international energy community to maintain and expand their partnerships and operations within the EU."

Al Kaabi and Wright emphasized their belief as allies and friends of the EU, stating that the directive could lead to higher energy and commodity prices, and negatively affect investment and trade. They urged the EU and its Member States to address these concerns by either repealing the CSDDD or removing its most economically damaging provisions.
