Qatar Criticizes Israeli Airstrikes in Syria and Highlights Its Global Sports Ambitions

Doha: Qatari newspaper editorials have condemned recent Israeli airstrikes in Syria, emphasizing the threat these attacks pose to Syria's unity, stability, and security. The airstrikes, which targeted the southern province of Daraa, resulted in the deaths of nine civilians and injuries to 23 others. This has been described as a blatant violation of international law and Syrian sovereignty.

According to Qatar News Agency, the State of Qatar issued a statement urging the international community to act swiftly to ensure Israel complies with international laws and conventions. The statement called for an immediate halt to Israel's repeated assaults on Syrian territory to prevent further regional escalation and tension. Qatar reaffirmed its full support for Syria's sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and the aspirations of its people for security and stability.

The editorial further argued that the escalation is an intentional effort to destabilize Syria and the wider region. It stressed the international community's responsibility to intervene and stop Israel's ongoing aggression, calling for an end to what it described as Israel's horrific crimes.

On the domestic front, The Peninsula, an English-language daily, highlighted Qatar's continuing efforts to strengthen its reputation as a leading international sports hub following its successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup. The newspaper noted that hosting such a prestigious championship for the second time marks a significant milestone for the country. Qatar's strategic investments in sports infrastructure, organizational expertise, and ambition to host major events have solidified its status as a global sporting destination. Qatar previously made history by becoming the first Arab country to host the World Table Tennis Championships in 2004.

The article concluded by emphasizing Qatar's commitment to shaping its future as a key player in the global sports arena. It noted that the tournament is not the only major event on Qatar's 2025 sports calendar, as Doha is set to host the U-17 FIFA World Cup in November and the FIFA Arab Cup in December, underscoring its growing influence in the sports world.
