Cairo: The State of Qatar participated in the meeting of the Senior Arab Officials Committee on Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), which commenced on Monday and is set to continue for three days at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States.
According to Qatar News Agency, the State of Qatar was represented at the meeting by HE Chairperson of the National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons (NCPW) Brigadier Sultan Rashid Al Hudhaifi. The agenda for the meeting encompassed several key topics of interest to Arab states in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation. Among these were the coordination of Arab positions for participation in the Eleventh Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the 70th Session of the IAEA General Conference.
In a speech delivered during the event, HE Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the International Political Affairs Sector of the League of Arab States, Ambassador Khalid bin Mohammed Manzalawi, underscored the significance of the Senior Arab Officials Committee. He highlighted that this is the sole technical body within the framework of the Arab League that addresses issues related to weapons of mass destruction, particularly nuclear weapons. Ambassador Manzalawi elaborated that since its inception in the early 1990s, the committee has played a crucial role in monitoring and addressing Israeli nuclear capabilities. It has also been instrumental in formulating unified Arab positions in international forums pertinent to disarmament and non-proliferation.
