The State of Qatar participated in the United Nations Ministerial Meeting on Peacekeeping, held in Seoul, the Republic of Korea.
HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi headed Qatar's delegation to the meeting.
In Qatar's speech delivered via videoconferencing, HE the State Minister said that Qatar, along with the international community, attaches great importance to building and maintaining peace, as it is the basis for restoring conflict-affected communities to normal life, recovering from the negative effects of the conflict, enjoying basic rights, and returning of service institutions, including access to health and education services and institutions of the rule of law, stressing that the State of Qatar provides support to many peace-building and preservation programs to achieve those goals.
He pointed out that the State of Qatar, as part of its contribution to the UN peacebuilding efforts, pledged to support the UN Secretary-General's Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) with USD200,000 in 2021 and had previously provided USD88,500,000 earmarked support for early recovery at the Donor Conference for Reconstruction and Development in Darfur.
Also, His Excellency pointed out that Qatar believes that peacekeeping should not be the initial reaction to every international or regional crisis that occurs, stressing that a greater role should be given to preventive diplomacy and mediation to resolve disputes.
He pointed out that the State of Qatar has a rich experience in this field, through which it has proven that impartial mediation is capable of creating and stabilizing opportunities for sustainable peace between countries and within the countries themselves, adding that its latest efforts were to resolve the conflict in Afghanistan.
HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi said that the State of Qatar will host in January in Doha the UN International Symposium on Youth Participation in Peace Processes, in recognition of the importance of the role of youth in building and maintaining peace, adding that Doha will also host in January the Fifth United Nations Conference on Least Countries Developed, based on its belief that poverty eradication and good governance are essential pillars for building and consolidating peace.
