New york: The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing support for international efforts aimed at promoting, respecting, and protecting human rights for all. This announcement was made during Qatar's statement delivered by Noor Al Maarifi, a member of Qatar's delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, during the General Assembly's general debate on item (66) regarding the report of the Human Rights Council, at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Maarifi emphasized that Qatar prioritizes respecting, protecting, and promoting human rights, as reflected in its constitutional and legislative framework. This framework enshrines the principles of human rights and fundamental freedoms, ensuring their respect and protection within an institutional system comprising various bodies and institutions dedicated to human rights.
Al Maarifi highlighted Qatar's commitment to fulfilling its international human rights obligations and maintaining continuous engagement with United Nations human rights mechanisms. She noted that Qatar submitted its fourth national report to the Universal Periodic Review mechanism last November, demonstrating its dedication to human rights promotion and protection.
Furthermore, Qatar continues to play an active role through its membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term. Al Maarifi stated this membership reflects Qatar's status as a credible international partner, committed to humanitarian work and international cooperation to address global challenges.
She also mentioned that from 2012 until June 2023, the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) provided over USD 6 billion in development and humanitarian aid to various countries. This aid targets sectors like education, healthcare, economic growth, and relief, showcasing Qatar's commitment to development, humanitarian work, and human rights.
Qatar remains supportive of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and looks forward to ongoing efforts in this field. Al Maarifi expressed pride in hosting the United Nations Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region in human rights.
The Human Rights Council's report, as noted by Al Maarifi, listed resolutions concerning the human rights situation in occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. These resolutions highlight concerns over the conflict's consequences, particularly the high number of casualties among Palestinian civilians.
Al Maarifi reiterated Qatar's condemnation of targeting civilians and its steadfast solidarity with the Palestinian people, emphasizing efforts to achieve security and stability in the region.
