Qatar Regrets UN Security Council’s Failure to Adopt Draft Resolution Ending Humanitarian Catastrophe in Gaza

Doha: The State of Qatar expressed its regret over the UN Security Council's failure to adopt a draft resolution aimed at ending the catastrophic humanitarian suffering of civilians in the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing Israeli aggression, and calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire by all parties, as well as the immediate release of all hostages, detainees, and Palestinian prisoners.

According to Qatar News Agency, this statement was delivered by HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during the UN General Assembly's plenary session on agenda item 64 concerning the "Use of the Veto." This session was held following the veto used against the draft resolution on the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Her Excellency noted that the session occurred after a veto was exercised in the Security Council on September 18 against a draft resolution submitted by the elected members of the Council concerning the situation in Gaza. She emphasized the joint efforts of eight Arab and Islamic countries, which met with HE US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the General Assembly's high-level week, urging Israel to lift restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza and ensure its safe distribution in coordination with the United Nations and humanitarian organizations.

Sheikha Alya reiterated that Qatar remains committed to de-escalating regional tensions, preserving international peace, and working towards a resolution to end the Gaza conflict. She highlighted Qatar's successful mediation efforts, alongside Egypt and the United States, which facilitated the release of numerous Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees and prisoners, as well as the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza despite numerous challenges.

HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN affirmed Qatar's readiness to remain actively engaged in resolving the Gaza conflict in line with President Trump's initiative, reflecting Qatar's commitment to diplomatic conflict resolution and regional stability. She also praised President Trump's leadership and efforts to bring peace to Gaza, expressing confidence in his peace-building capabilities, as reiterated in a joint statement with eight Arab and Islamic countries.

Her Excellency underscored Qatar's partnership with the United States in promoting peace, welcoming President Trump's proposal to end the Gaza war, rebuild the region, prevent Palestinian displacement, and advance comprehensive peace. The proposal includes preventing West Bank annexation, with eight Arab and Islamic nations expressing willingness to engage constructively with the US and other parties to implement a comprehensive peace agreement.

Sheikha Alya noted Qatar's support for the UN General Assembly's adoption of the New York Declaration on implementing the two-state solution and establishing an independent Palestinian state, acknowledging the roles of Saudi Arabia and France in co-chairing the successful conference. Furthermore, she expressed gratitude for the growing number of UN member states recognizing Palestine, advancing a just and comprehensive conflict resolution.

Her Excellency reaffirmed Qatar's unwavering support for the Palestinian people's legitimate struggle for self-determination, in line with UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, advocating for an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
