Istanbul- Qatar has been awarded the honour of hosting the global gymnastics family for the 85th International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Congress in 2024.
The decision on Doha as a host city was taken today by delegates at the 84th FIG Congress in Istanbul, Turkey, receiving 148 votes against 89 votes to Croatia. In a presentation to delegates, Qatar's bid team highlighted why Doha would be the perfect host, including its proven track-record in successfully delivering international events, stunning cultural highlights and world-renowned hospitality.
FIG First Vice President and QGF President Ali Al-Hitmi said:
“This is a very proud moment for the gymnastics and sports community in Qatar, and we are honoured to have been awarded this prestigious gathering by our fellow National Federations. We are excited to welcome the FIG family to experience the friendliest of welcomes and all that Doha has to offer.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Qatar Olympic Committee under the leadership of H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani and the QOC Secretary General H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain for their unlimited support to Gymnastics. I want also to hail the efforts of Marketing and Communications Department, Public Relations and International Cooperation Department and our team for their contribution to preparing Doha bid” Al Hitmi Added.
“Our work to ensure everything is in place come 2024 starts immediately, and we will continue our excellent collaboration with FIG to guarantee a productive and enjoyable stay in Qatar.”
Doha has previously hosted a number of international gymnastics events, the most recent of which include the 2018 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and 2022 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
