Doha: Greek player Maria Sakkari, ranked 52nd in the world, advanced to the semifinals of the Qatar TotalEnergies Open (WTA 1000) after defeating Poland's Iga Swiatek, ranked world No. 2, in three sets today in the quarterfinals.
According to Qatar News Agency, the 30-year-old Greek player knocked out the 24-year-old Pole, who was seeded first in the tournament, with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in a match that lasted approximately two and a half hours on the main court of the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
Sakkari will face in tomorrow's (Friday) semifinal the winner between Czech player Karolina Muchova and Russia's Anna Kalinskaya.
Swiatek, for her part, failed to reach the final of the tournament, which she won in 2022, 2023, and 2024. The Polish player has 25 career titles, including six Grand Slam titles.
With her quarterfinal exit, Swiatek faces the risk of losing her No. 2 position in the WTA rankings if Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina wins the Qatar TotalEnergies title.
Earlier today, Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko, last year's runner-up, advanced to the semifinals after defeating Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-5, 6-4.
Ostapenko will meet the winner of the match between Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina and Canada's young 10th seed Victoria Mboko.
