Qatari Researcher Releases Book on Tear Film Structure and Health

Doha: Rosa Publishing House announced the release of "Aspects of Tear Film Structure," a groundbreaking work by the distinguished Qatari researcher and scholar in optometry, Dr. Nabila Yousef Al Tamimi. This comprehensive book represents a significant advancement in optometry, delving deep into the molecular composition of tear fluid, with a primary focus on fibronectin, a crucial protein for tear film stability. According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Al Tamimi's research uncovers new insights into ocular surface health and therapeutic applications, offering an in-depth examination of fibronectin concentration across diverse tear conditions, such as closed-eye, open-eye, and stimulated tears. Utilizing methods such as ELISA, gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting, this book quantifies fibronectin levels and reveals that closed-eye tears have the highest concentration of fibronectin, while stimulated tears contain the lowest. Additionally, Dr. Al Tamimi's work identifies six key tear proteins, including lact oferrin and secretory IgA, highlighting their roles in maintaining tear stability and ocular surface protection. This second edition also pioneers efforts to localize fibronectin within the tear film, using rabbit models to visualize fibronectin's structural interactions with the corneal epithelium. The stability and health of the tear film are essential for protecting the ocular surface, and disturbances in tear composition can lead to various eye conditions. This book serves as an invaluable resource for clinicians, researchers, and students, providing detailed analyses of tear fluid components, particularly fibronectin. Through cutting-edge techniques, Dr. Al Tamimi explores variations in fibronectin concentration across different types of tear fluid, offering insights that contribute to both optometric and ophthalmologic understanding of eye health. Dr. Nabila Yousef Al Tamimi is a leading researcher and scholar in optometry. She has served as the Head of the Optometry at Hamad Medical Corporation, an e xpert at the Ministry of Public Health - optometry division, and a Professor in Ophthalmology - Optometry at Qatar University.
