Algiers: Speaker of the Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah Al-Ghanim emphasized Qatar's dedication to Arab solidarity, cooperation, and the support of international peace efforts, particularly in the Arab region, during his speech at the 38th Conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union in Algeria. He reaffirmed Qatar's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. According to Union of OIC News Agencies, Al-Ghanim highlighted the role of parliaments in addressing political, security, and economic challenges in the Arab region. He underscored Qatar's alignment with the goals of the Arab Parliamentary Union, promoting joint action amid rapid regional changes. He also urged global parliaments to unite in forming a cohesive international parliamentary front that represents the will of free peoples and coordinates international positions and initiatives. Al-Ghanim addressed the challeng es faced by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, particularly concerning the voting mechanism for emergency items. Although the Arab Geopolitical Group, supported by other groups, submitted proposals on humanitarian issues like a ceasefire in Gaza and criminalizing religious blasphemy, these were not adopted due to a complex voting system. He advocated for reforming the voting system to "one vote per state," similar to the United Nations General Assembly, to ensure equality among member states. The Speaker praised the Arab Parliamentary Union's efforts to enhance Arab participation in Inter-Parliamentary Union meetings and support Arab parliamentarians' nominations for committee memberships. He emphasized the importance of nominating Arab talent for leadership positions within the Inter-Parliamentary Union, enhancing Arab presence in international parliamentary institutions. The 38th Conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union is attended by heads of Arab parliaments and legislative councils to discuss regional an d international issues and common challenges, aiming to strengthen joint Arab parliamentary action and diplomacy amid global changes.
