Qatar’s Representative Engages in UNCTAD Dialogue on Sustainable Growth and Investment

Geneva: HE Permanent Representative of State of Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Dr Hind bint Abdulrahman Al Muftah, participated alongside the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in a dialogue on "Strengthening institutions for sustainable growth: rethinking international investment agreements (IIAs) in the context of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the sustainable development goals 2030." The event was organized by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's Office to the World Trade Organization and other economic organizations at the UN headquarters in Geneva.

According to Qatar News Agency, Her Excellency emphasized the significance of the partnership between Qatar and UNCTAD, considering it a crucial element in achieving mutual goals, specifically in attracting and maintaining sustainable investments. She expressed pride in Qatar's role in hosting the 13th UNCTAD conference in Doha in 2012 and its efforts to enhance UNCTAD's influence and broaden its mandate, particularly during Qatar's presidency of the organization.

Her Excellency further highlighted Qatar's recognition of the importance of collaborating with UNCTAD, particularly in areas related to capacity-building and the advancement of international investment agreements. She emphasized the need for an effective framework for trade policies, noting that UNCTAD's expertise provides essential tools and knowledge for Qatar to adapt to the evolving global investment landscape, thereby aligning Qatar's policies with national development priorities and international best practices.

The dialogue included HE Secretary-General of UNCTAD, Rebeca Grynspan, Director of the State of Qatar's office to the WTO and other economic organizations in Geneva, Ahmed Issa Al Sulaiti, as well as a range of academics and experts from UNCTAD's General Secretariat. The panelists discussed Qatar's policies and its national manufacturing strategy for 2024-2030, aimed at enhancing sustainable growth through green manufacturing, research and development, economic diversification, and strengthening innovation and international competitive capabilities.

Additionally, they explored the possibility of organizing a joint annual conference between Qatar and UNCTAD in Doha. This conference would focus on issues related to international investment agreements and the Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular emphasis on economic diversity and promoting creativity and entrepreneurship, especially among youth and women.

The event was part of Qatar's ongoing efforts to foster investment and achieve sustainable development.
