Doha: The Qatari U-23 3x3 Basketball Team embarked on their campaign at the 3x3 Basketball World Cup in Xiong'an, China, which runs from September 17 to 21. The team faced two defeats in the initial rounds of the group stage.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Qatari team lost their opening match against the US with a score of 15-21, followed by another loss against China, ending 18-21. The team is competing in a challenging group that also features Latvia and Fiji.
The Qatari delegation is led by Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, Secretary General of the Qatar Basketball Federation, who also serves as the Director of National Teams. The delegation includes Captain Yassin Ismail, Director of the 3x3 Basketball Team, and players Mohammed Bashir, Mahmoud Darwish, Mubarak Jama, and Mustafa Ndaw.
The team will continue their preparations for the forthcoming group matches against Latvia and Fiji on September 20, aiming to secure positive outcomes that would bolster their chances of advancing to the quarterfinals. The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarterfinals, as determined by the group stage (round robin) system.
The seedings for the tournament are based on the FIBA U-23 rankings, effective January 1, 2025. Qatar's national team earned their place in the World Cup following an impressive performance in the 2025 3x3 Youth Nations League, where they clinched titles in the third and sixth stages hosted by the Qatar Football Association in Doha, amassing 520 points to qualify for the World Cup.
