Doha: Qatar National Library has invited its visitors to explore the world of sports through its book collections as part of its celebration of National Sports Day 2026, which falls this year on Tuesday, February 10. According to Qatar News Agency, to mark the occasion, the Library has nominated eight books for reading, drawing from its rich collection of valuable titles and references that cater to sports enthusiasts, researchers in related fields, and those interested in the relationship between sport, culture, and societal development. The selected works address topics ranging from Qatar's traditional sporting activities to global perspectives on health and physical fitness. This initiative comes as part of the Library's commitment to engaging with the annual event in a way that reflects the fundamental role of physical activity in building healthy and thriving communities, while also underscoring the State of Qatar's steadfast commitment to promoting a culture of fitness and sporting excellence. Among the Arabic-language titles is "Traditional Sports in the State of Qatar: Camels - Equestrianism - Archery - Falconry," which highlights four traditional sports deeply rooted in Qatar's cultural identity: camel racing, equestrianism, shooting, and falconry. Authored by Abu Bakr Al Hassan, the book describes these sports as living links between Qatar's present and its past and traditions, documenting their continued cultural symbolism in contemporary Qatari society and their ability to adapt to the demands of the modern era. The selections also include "Qatari Insights into the Sports Scene," in which its author, Ali Mohammed Youssef Al Mahmoud, presents Qatar's vision of the contemporary sports landscape and offers a national perspective on the country's relationship with sport, making it a valuable reference for those seeking to understand sports culture and its development in the State. Another recommended title is "Healthy Sports for Achieving Public Health (Physical and Psychological)," by Dr. Muayyad Ab d Ali Al Tai, which examines the close link between sport and public health, its impact on physical and mental well-being, and how regular participation in sporting activities represents a cornerstone of public health and improved lifestyles. This perspective aligns with the objectives of National Sports Day in emphasizing the importance of physical activity for building healthier, more prosperous communities. The list also features "Sports for People with Disabilities," by Professor Nahid Abd Zaid Al-Dulaimi, University of Babylon, College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. The book focuses on disability sports, addressing mechanisms for designing sporting activities that ensure inclusion, integration, and accessibility, embodying the principle that everyone has the right to engage in physical activity regardless of skills or abilities. These insights enrich public dialogue on equality, equal opportunity, and inclusion in sport. Also included is "Sport," by Mike Cronin and translated by Hazem Ali. The book offers Arab readers an opportunity to explore the author's research on sport as a social and cultural phenomenon, reviewing its multiple impacts on contemporary society. Another title, "Sports for All in the Context of Contemporary Changes and Crises," by Dr. Mohammed Asem Mohammed Ghazi. The book discusses the concept of "sport for all" amid modern transformations, explores ways to sustain and enhance available physical activity programs despite contemporary challenges, and emphasizes the importance of ensuring that inclusive sports initiatives reach all members of society regardless of circumstances. Among the English-language books recommended for the occasion is "Modern Sports Around the World: History, Geography, and Sociology," by David Asa Schwartz. The book adopts a multidisciplinary approach to the study of sport worldwide, analyzing it from historical, geographical, and social perspectives. The book also examines how different societies create their own unique sporting activities and how these activities reflect cultural values, economic systems, and broader social frameworks. Another English-language title is "World of Sports: A Book for Sports Fans All Over the Globe," in which author Ben Groundwater collaborates with illustrator Paul Reid to take readers on an illustrated journey through diverse sporting cultures around the world, celebrating athletic activities across continents while highlighting major global competitions and traditions that embody local popular passion in each region. Qatar National Library has invited the public to explore these and other titles within its collections as part of the State's celebration of sport's ability to unite communities, inspire individuals, and strengthen social cohesion.
