Doha: The Qatar Social and Cultural Center for the Blind (QSCCB) celebrated World Sight Day and White Cane Day, observed annually on October 15, through a series of inclusive events and activities aimed at engaging all segments of society. The initiative seeks to raise awareness about visual impairment and promote the rights of blind individuals to independence and community participation. According to Qatar News Agency, among the key events is an educational seminar on the White Cane as a symbol of independence in light of Sharia and law, organized in collaboration with the Disability Programs Monitoring Unit at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs. Scheduled for Monday at the center's headquarters, the seminar will explore topics such as the role of the cane in the Qur'an and Sunnah, and the legal evolution and international recognition of the white cane. To further promote awareness, the center is launching an online educational competition focused on visual impairment, alongside field engageme nts at several schools and educational institutions, including Rabaa Al Adawiya Independent Secondary School for Girls, Al Andalus Private School for Girls, and the College of Education at Qatar University. These will feature exhibitions and workshops highlighting the importance of empowering individuals with visual disabilities. Commenting on the occasion, QSCCB Chairman Faisal Al Kohiji stated that these events reaffirm the center's mission to enhance societal awareness of the importance of supporting visually impaired individuals and enabling them to live independently and with dignity. Through these activities, he added, they aim to spotlight the vital role of the white cane as a global symbol of independence and to foster a culture of respect for the rights and capabilities of the blind. Al Kohiji added that the center continuously strives to build bridges of communication with all community groups through awareness programs that promote values of inclusion and equality.
