Russia Agrees to Temporary Halt on Airstrikes in Ukraine at Trump’s Request

Russia: Russia announced that President Vladimir Putin has agreed to a week-long halt to airstrikes on Kyiv, ending Sunday, following a request from his US counterpart, Donald Trump.

According to Qatar News Agency, Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian presidency (the Kremlin), stated during a press conference that Trump personally asked Putin to refrain from launching airstrikes on Kyiv for a week, until February 1, in order to create favorable conditions for negotiations.

These Russian assurances follow Trump's revelation yesterday that he had asked Putin to stop the attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region due to the cold wave sweeping Ukraine. Moscow clarified that the US request was intended to advance the Washington-led negotiation process aimed at ending nearly four years of war between the two neighbors.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Moscow's decision on social media today, confirming that Russian forces did not launch any strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities last night. Recent Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have led to power outages, heating and water supply disruptions, with temperatures plummeting, deepening the humanitarian crisis.
