Doha: South Korea on Tuesday reaffirmed its "consistent" goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. "Denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula is the consistent goal of the international community, including South Korea and the United States," the South Korea's foreign ministry stated.
According to Qatar News Agency, the ministry emphasized that the UN has also been urging North Korea to denuclearize through a series of Security Council resolutions. This statement comes in response to North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Kim Son-gyong, who, during a general debate of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday, reiterated North Korea's stance on preserving its nuclear program.
Kim Son-gyong expressed that any demand for denuclearization is equivalent to demanding North Korea to relinquish its sovereignty and right to existence. Despite this, South Korea's ministry conveyed its commitment to continue diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving peaceful coexistence and mutual growth through comprehensive dialogue, maintaining close coordination with the United States.
