Manama, The Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) has announced a fishing ban on spangled Emperor (Shari), rabbitfish (Safi) and seabream (Andag), from May 1-31, according to Edict (2) of 2024, issued by His Highness Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Personal Representative of His Majesty the King and President of the SCE. The SCE announced that the decision is part of Bahrain's efforts to protect marine resources and to promote environmental balance and ecosystem rehabilitation. Article 1 of the decision prohibits fishing in Bahrain's territorial waters for Shaari, Safi, and Andag fish during April and May each year. For the year 2024, the ban is applicable only in May. Fishermen must release these fish caught during the ban back into the sea, ensuring their safety. The SCE emphasised the importance of strengthening community cooperation to enforce the decision, essential for preserving fish stocks, highlighting that regulating fishing is a national responsibility, with positive effects on society. T he council affirmed that marine resources teams, in coordination with relevant authorities, are committed to increasing surveillance to prevent any violations of this decision. This ensures the development, growth, and preservation of fish and marine resources for current and future generations. Source: Bahrain News Agency
