Doha: Senegal booked a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 3-1 victory over Sudan in their Round of 16 clash on Saturday, as the 35th edition of the tournament continues in Morocco.
According to Qatar News Agency, Sudan made a fast start, taking the lead in the 6th minute through Amer Abdullah. However, Senegal responded with Papa Gueye scoring twice in the 29th minute and 45+3 minutes to turn the match around. Ibrahim Mbaye sealed the win with a third goal in the 77th minute.
The victory made Senegal the first team to reach the quarter-finals, extending their impressive run in the competition. They topped Group D with seven points, edging DR Congo on goal difference. Sudan, who finished third in Group E with three points behind Algeria (nine points) and Burkina Faso (six points).
Senegal will now face the winner of the Mali vs. Tunisia encounter in the quarter-finals. That match is scheduled to take place later today at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, while Sudan were eliminated from the tournament.
