The International Olympic Committee (IOC) revealed Monday seven candidates to compete in the elections scheduled for next year to elect a new president to succeed German Thomas Bach, who announced last August that he would not run for a new term. The IOC said in a statement Monday that the seven candidates are: - Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations and winner of the gold medal in the 1500-meter race twice in his Olympic career, in addition to a long leadership career as he was the head of the organizing committee for the London 2012 Olympics, and the head of the British Olympic Committee. - Prince Faisal bin Al Hussein, President of the Jordan Olympic Committee since 2003, has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2010, and joined the Executive Committee in 2019. - David Lappartine, President of the International Cycling Union since 2017. - Kirsty Coventry, a former Zimbabwean swimmer who won 7 medals, including 2 golds in 5 editions, joi ned the International Olympic Committee in 2013 and chaired the Athletes' Commission. She has been a member of the Executive Committee since 2018. - Juan Antonio Samaranch, son of the former President of the International Olympic Committee between 1980 and 2001, is serving for the second time as Vice President of the International Olympic Committee. He was a member of the Coordination Commission for the 2006 Turin Olympics and then the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and chaired the Coordination Commission for the 2022 Beijing Olympics. - Johan Elias, President of the International Ski Federation since 2021, has been involved in environmental advocacy for a long time and joined the International Olympic Committee in July 2024. - Morinari Watanabe, President of the International Gymnastics Federation. The election of the new president to succeed the outgoing German Thomas Bach is scheduled to take place during the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session to be held next March in the Greek capital, Athens.
