Shafallah Center to Observe World Autism Awareness Day Wednesday

Doha: Shafallah Center for Persons with Disabilities is set to observe World Autism Awareness Day on Wednesday, which annually falls on April 2 under the theme of a spectrum: a journey of understanding and embrace. Executive Director of Al Shafallah Center for Persons with Disabilities Maryam Saif Al Suwaidi emphasized the importance of this celebration in highlighting the milestones achieved by the State of Qatar in supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and furthering their inclusion in the community.

According to Qatar News Agency, Al Suwaidi noted that this year's theme underscores the enhanced support and empowerment for individuals with ASD, promoting their active engagement and greater inclusion in society. This involves conducting a variety of awareness-raising and media activities. The state of Qatar prioritizes the rehabilitation and inclusion of individuals with ASD, with plans and initiatives that increase awareness among parents and professionals. Comprehensive services aim to improve the developmental and cognitive abilities of individuals with ASD, facilitate their daily lives, and support their families.

Al Suwaidi highlighted that Qatar's National Autism Plan is aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030, aiming to ensure a decent living for all Qataris. She mentioned that ministries and relevant entities have worked extensively to develop a national plan that identifies essential needs, trends, and ambitions to empower all community members, including those with ASD.

The Shafallah Center's autism section welcomes individuals with ASD from birth to age three and offers inclusive rehabilitation programs from age six to 16. Afterward, they transition to the vocational training and rehabilitation department to receive professional rehabilitation services and employment preparation. The center provides a range of rehabilitation and therapeutic services through a multidisciplinary team, with interventions delivered in individual sessions lasting up to 40 minutes.

Al Suwaidi explained that these sessions are tailored to address specific needs, including speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and nutritional services. Participants also benefit from ongoing medical follow-up, pharmacological supervision, and psychological and behavioral monitoring. She emphasized that persons with disabilities have equal rights, including the right to work in a chosen environment with fair conditions and equal opportunities.
