Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award: Culmination of Qatar’s Efforts to Promote Transparency and Integrity -2-

Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award in the category of Academic Research and Education aims to fight corruption through various means, including research and education. Combating corruption can be more effective through understanding and studying the causes and factors that create and propagate corruption. This category recognizes individuals and/or entities who have a peer-recognized body of research and publications in the anti-corruption area. They should have a significant contribution to the growth of knowledge in anti-corruption through research, publications, and education-related work; and this contribution be significant towards raising awareness among the academic community on anti-corruption. The Youth Creativity and Engagement category focuses on the importance of involving younger generations, be it teenage youths, university students, or young professionals, in the fight against corruption, since the fight against corruption is not only something that must be done in the present but also thinking of the future ahead of us. This category seeks to recognize and encourage those projects designed and led by or for young people and, where applicable, supported by non-governmental organizations or civil society. The projects could range from anti-corruption initiatives led by youth to summer camps or schools and awareness-raising campaigns coordinated by youths. What matters most is the development and leadership in the implementation of individual or collective activities, projects, or initiatives designed to raise awareness, and propose new solutions to preventing and combating corruption among young people or society at large. The Innovation/Investigative Journalism category looks to reward those who have created and developed the necessary tools to help in the fight against corruption, as the fight against corruption does not only need the will of an engaged sector of people and organizations but also requires tools to be able to combat corruption. This includes the development, and use of innovative solutions and approaches to anti-corruption action and the raising of awareness. Such solutions and approaches may involve innovative methodologies that will help those who wish to combat corruption in every way possible. This category also seeks to celebrate those who shine a light on the corruption that negatively impacts societies around the world through their journalistic endeavors. Sound and ethical investigative journalism plays a critical role in tackling corruption by exposing and documenting corruption and corrupt actors, laying the foundation for long-lasting change. This category recognizes those who have produced exceptional pieces of investigative journalism that have helped to uncover corruption at a local, national, regional, or even international level. The Safeguarding Sports from Corruption category seeks to celebrate those individuals and entities that have worked to safeguard sport against corruption, whether this is at a local, regional, or national level. It is open to those who have either, made a measurable impact on reducing the risk of corruption occurring within a particular sport or sport in general, who have conducted research related to the effect of corruption on sport, or who have fought to reduce the impact of existing corruption on a particular sport or sport in general, especially since global sports industry has long been an attractive target for those seeking to engage in corruption.
