San francisco: Researchers at the Endocrine Society's meeting in San Francisco emphasized that elderly individuals over the age of 80 who suffer from fractures due to osteoporosis can significantly benefit from initiating bone-strengthening medications, despite previous concerns about side effects in this age group. According to Qatar News Agency, the findings are based on a study conducted by researchers at the Cleveland Clinic, involving more than 88,000 patients aged over 80 who had osteoporosis-related fractures. Half of the participants received specialized medications such as Fosamax (Merck), Boniva (Roche), Prolia (Amgen), Evista, and Forteo (Eli Lilly), while the other half did not receive any drug treatment. Five-year follow-up results showed a 19% reduction in hospital admissions and a 15% decrease in mortality rates among those who received treatment, accounting for other health conditions. Lead researcher Dr. Gianina Flocco stated that the findings highlight the importance of not hesitating to initiate osteoporosis treatment in the elderly, while considering each patient's individual condition. She added that this approach helps reduce complications such as fractures, which may lead to disability or death, thereby improving quality of life for seniors amid a growing aging population.
