Syria: Syria and Jordan on Monday signed an agreement for the sale and purchase of natural gas, aimed at supplying Syria with gas via Jordanian territory. The agreement seeks to support the electricity sector and help alleviate the acute energy shortage.
According to Qatar News Agency, the agreement was signed by Hisham Al Saleh, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Syrian Petroleum Company, and Sufian Al Battayneh, Director General of the Jordanian Electricity Company. During the signing ceremony, which was attended by Syrian Minister of Energy Mohammad Al Bashir and his Jordanian counterpart Saleh Al Kharabsheh, Al Bashir emphasized that the agreement represents an important step within the Syrian government's efforts to enhance fuel supplies to the electricity sector and improve the reliability of power supply, particularly in light of the challenges the energy sector has faced in recent years.
Al Bashir explained that the agreement contributes to diversifying gas sources and improving the operational efficiency of power generation plants, which will positively impact the level of services provided to Syrian citizens. For his part, Jordanian Minister Saleh Al Kharabsheh stated that Jordan will supply Syria with approximately 4 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. He noted that Jordan has already begun supplying Syria with gas since the beginning of the current year, with quantities ranging between 30 and 90 million cubic feet per day, as part of urgent support for Syria's energy sector.
