Syria to Launch New Currency in January 2026

Doha: Syria's central bank has announced that a new national currency will be introduced on January 1, 2026, with a process to exchange the existing notes set to begin on the same date. The move is seen as a significant step in the country's economic and monetary strategy.

According to Qatar News Agency, a 2025 presidential decree authorizes the launch of the new currency, marking the beginning of a new economic phase for Syria. The decree grants the central bank the authority to determine the timetable and locations for exchanging the old currency.

Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdul Qader Husrieh, highlighted that detailed implementation instructions would be issued by the central bank ahead of the launch. The focus will be on simplifying procedures during the currency exchange process to ensure a smooth transition.
