Doha: and American security forces came under fire on Saturday when a gunman opened fire during a joint field patrol near the city of Palmyra.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), citing a security source, reported that the incident wounded two members of the Syrian security forces and several US personnel. The gunman was killed in the ensuing confrontation, though no details were released about his identity or motives.
The source mentioned that traffic on the Deir Al Zour-Damascus international highway was temporarily halted following the attack, as aircraft conducted intensive flights over the area. US helicopters later evacuated the wounded to the Al Tanf base in southern Syria.
The Pentagon stated that two US Army service members and a civilian interpreter were killed in an attack carried out by ISIS in Palmyra, where they were taking part in counterterrorism operations. Three others were wounded, a Pentagon spokesman, posted on X.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth mentioned in a separate post on the platform that partner forces killed the attacker.
