Damascus: The Syrian Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday a roadmap to resolve the crisis in Suweida Governorate and stabilize southern Syria, based on the unity of Syrian territories and the principle that all Syrians are equal citizens in their country with equal rights and duties.
According to Qatar News Agency, this announcement came following a tripartite meeting held earlier Tuesday in Damascus between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Al Safadi, and US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack. The ministry's statement highlighted that the roadmap commits the three countries to support efforts aimed at rebuilding Syria on foundations that preserve its security, stability, unity, and sovereignty, meeting the aspirations of all Syrians and protecting their rights.
The three countries have agreed on a comprehensive, gradual approach to address the situation in Suweida Governorate, reaffirming that the governorate is an integral part of Syria. They emphasized that bridging the trust gap between the Syrian government and the governorate requires a gradual, deliberate approach, beginning with measures to rebuild trust.
The roadmap outlines the need for cooperation to implement urgent steps, fully respecting Syrian sovereignty. A key step involves the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria conducting an investigation into recent events in Suweida Governorate, with the government committing to holding violators accountable.
Additionally, the Syrian government, with support from Jordan and the US, must ensure the delivery of humanitarian and medical aid to the governorate, working with UN agencies and other nations to reach those in need. Other measures include deploying trained Ministry of Interior forces along the Suweida-Damascus road to ensure safe movement of citizens and trade, withdrawing civilian fighters from Suweida's borders, and enabling residents of affected villages to return safely.
The countries also stressed the importance of the Syrian government leading efforts to promote a national narrative celebrating unity, pluralism, equality, and the rule of law. They emphasized accelerating efforts to end hate speech, thereby enhancing stability and national reconciliation.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Syrian Foreign Minister's meeting with his Jordanian counterpart and the US Special Envoy continued discussions initiated in Amman, aimed at consolidating the ceasefire in Suweida Governorate and resolving the crisis.
