Thailand Launches Airstrikes as Border Tensions with Cambodia Escalate

Doha: Thailand launched airstrikes along its disputed border with Cambodia on Monday following renewed cross-border clashes, with each side accusing the other of initiating the violence. Thai army spokesman Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree said Cambodian forces opened fire early Monday in Ubon Ratchathani province, killing one Thai soldier and wounding four others. He added that the Thai military deployed aircraft to strike Cambodian military targets in several areas to suppress fire-support attacks.

According to Qatar News Agency, Cambodian authorities said Thai forces launched dawn attacks on Cambodian troops in the border provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey, while maintaining that Cambodian forces did not return fire. The renewed violence comes months after a five-day conflict in July that left dozens dead and displaced hundreds of thousands, despite a ceasefire signed in October with international mediation.

Authorities on both sides have begun evacuating civilians from border-adjacent areas, with the Thai military reporting that hundreds of thousands of residents across several districts are being moved to safety.
