Thailand’s Parliament Elects New Prime Minister

Thai Parliament elected on Tuesday Srettha Thavisin for the position of the new Prime Minister, after he received more than half of the votes of the 500 deputies and 250 senators.

The Thai Parliament elected Srettha Thavisin for Prime Minister a few hours after the former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra returned to the country, as the Supreme Court of Thailand sent Shinawatra to jail after the 15 years he had spent in exile voluntarily.

Last July, the Thai Parliament’s deputies refused to appoint candidate Pita Limjaroenrat – leader of Move Forward Party, because of his reformist program, which they considered extremist towards the monarchy.

Thailand’s economy suffers from lower growth rates than its neighboring countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam.
