Ukraine Accepts US-Backed 30-Day Ceasefire Proposal with Russia

Jeddah: The United States and Ukraine announced Tuesday that Kyiv has agreed to Washington's proposal to declare a 30-day ceasefire with Russia and take steps towards restoring permanent peace between the two countries.

According to Qatar News Agency, the two sides reached an understanding after negotiations that lasted more than eight hours in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A joint statement revealed plans to conclude a comprehensive agreement to develop vital mineral resources in Ukraine as soon as possible.

In a related context, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude towards the US team for the constructive talks in Saudi Arabia. He clarified that the ceasefire proposal extends to the front lines and not just air and naval operations. Furthermore, Ukraine proposed to Washington an air and naval ceasefire alongside real confidence-building measures, including the release of prisoners.

Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity for Washington to persuade Moscow to accept the 30-day ceasefire proposal that emerged during the Ukrainian-American talks in Jeddah. He conveyed Ukraine's positive outlook on the truce proposal and reaffirmed the country's readiness for peace, urging Russia to declare its position on efforts to halt the conflict.

Saudi Arabia hosted these talks between Washington and Kyiv as part of its ongoing efforts to mediate the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. The discussions were attended by the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah.
