Ukrainian President Calls for Trilateral Summit with US, Russia

Kyiv: President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for a trilateral summit with US President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin, as part of ongoing efforts to persuade Moscow to halt its three-year-long operations.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Kremlin swiftly dismissed the possibility of such a summit unless substantial agreements were reached. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that a meeting of this nature should be the result of a solid agreement reached by the Russian and Ukrainian delegations. Earlier this month, the Russian President declined a proposal to meet with Zelenskyy in Turkiye.

The US President expressed frustration over the inability of Putin and Zelenskyy to reach an agreement to end the conflict. Zelenskyy stated Wednesday that if Putin is uncomfortable with a bilateral meeting, or if a trilateral summit is preferred, he has no objections and is prepared for any format.

He expressed his readiness for a summit with Trump and Putin and called on Washington to impose a comprehensive package of sanctions targeting Russia's energy and banking sectors. He added in his statements that Ukraine is awaiting sanctions from the US since Trump said that if Russia does not cease its actions, sanctions will be imposed.

Zelenskyy said that he discussed with Trump two key areas; energy and banking, and the Ukrainian President hopes that the US impose sanctions on these sectors.
