Geneva: Member states of the International Labour Organization (ILO), a UN agency, adopted today the first international treaty aimed at strengthening the protection of all workers in the digital platform economy, who are the backbone of the digital economy. The treaty, which was discussed over several years before its adoption during a plenary session that concluded the ILO's annual conference, states that it applies to all workers in the digital platform economy "regardless of their employment status." According to Qatar News Agency, President of the ILO's annual conference, Juan Castillo, stated that the agreement was adopted "in its entirety." Parties participating in the ratification session explained that the treaty aims to bring about tangible improvements in the lives of millions of workers worldwide and represents significant progress and a starting point for developing public policies aimed at protecting workers across digital platforms. In a related context, representatives of several countries, particularly the United States, India, and Bangladesh, called for the treaty to be applied flexibly, taking into account the different legal and economic frameworks from one country to another.
