Riyadh: The United Nations: affirmed Friday its determination to increase humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, calling for every effort to ensure the continuation of the ceasefire in the Strip.
According to Qatar News Agency, Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said that humanitarian teams are implementing the 60-day plan developed by the United Nations to significantly expand life-saving work in the Gaza Strip.
Fletcher, who arrived in Gaza on Friday to assess the humanitarian situation there, noted that the challenges ahead are enormous, but he affirmed the UN's determination to realize the humanitarian potential offered by the agreement signed to end the war on Gaza.
Separately, Volker Trk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, called on all parties to ensure that human rights are at the center of recovery and peacebuilding processes, so that the ceasefire in Gaza can be transformed into a lasting peace.
In a statement Friday, he stressed the need to make every effort to ensure the ceasefire holds, saying, "There is much more to be done. It will require tremendous efforts and good faith from all parties to this conflict and the international community to create the conditions for peace, justice, and reconciliation. Human rights must be at the heart of these efforts."
He added that it is about ensuring that the voices of all Palestinians across Gaza and the West Bank are heard, and that full access to food, clean water, shelter, and medical care is restored as soon as possible.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also stressed the need to ensure recognition of the Palestinians' right to self-determination and the existence of inclusive and meaningful political processes leading to a two-state solution.
