UN Warns Over 20 Million People Suffer Severe Food Insecurity across Sudan

The United Nations said that the number of people suffering from severe food insecurity has doubled in Sudan, as clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces have forced about four million people to flee inside the country or take refuge abroad.

The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said in a statement on Wednesday that more than 20.3 million people, about 42 percent of the country's population, suffer from high levels of acute food insecurity. Compared to a May 2022 report, the number of those suffering severe food insecurity has nearly doubled, the statement added.

The UN described the situation in Sudan as critical, especially with nearly 6.3 million people in the emergency phase of acute hunger.

The FAO indicated that the most affected states are those experiencing active conflict, including Khartoum, South Kordofan, West Kordofan, Central Darfur, East Darfur, South Darfur and West Darfur, where more than half of the population faces acute hunger.
